Frequently asked questions
Do I need to file a tax return if my income is below the taxable limit?
Filing is still strongly recommended, and is mandatory in many cases (for example if you own property, a vehicle above 1000cc or are registered with a chamber or professional body). Only filers appear on FBR's Active Taxpayers List (ATL) and pay lower withholding tax on banking, property and vehicle transactions.
What is the Active Taxpayers List (ATL)?
The ATL is FBR's list of persons who have filed their income tax return for the latest tax year. Being on the ATL lets you pay reduced withholding tax rates and is often required by banks and for property or vehicle transactions.
What is the deadline for filing an income tax return?
For salaried individuals and most non-company taxpayers the return is normally due on 30 September after the tax year ends (30 June), unless FBR extends the date. Late filing can attract penalties and removal from the ATL.
